In Truth in Our Times Deputy General Counsel of the New York Times David E. McCraw offers a concise and engaging look at the centrality of freedom of the press to a democratic society. Deputy general counsel of the New York Times writer David E. McCraw gives us a firsthand account of fighting for the free press and the First Amendment in the Age of Trumpism when DJT is at constant war with liberal democracy and the press-specifically The New York Times. McCraw warns we live in a time where a significant portion of the population has an appetite for a totalitarian joke monster. Now we live in a time when the president demands that laws be changed to rein in First Amendment freedoms and denounces the press as the enemy of the people, a stain on society, and traffickers in fake news. The problem is not so much that he says all of that, the problem is how well it plays, delighting crowds that, in frenzy, turn to jeer the assembled press-corps covering the event. McCraw in this book has waged war against alternative facts. He wants to win the hearts and minds of the American people by waking up their passion for the First Amendment by showing the legal battles The New York Times has been fighting and fighting still against Trump and his henchmen. We must not, McCraw urges, become numb to the repetition of evil until it numbs us, becoming the banality of evil, a phrase McCraw borrows from Hannah Arendt throughout the book. In many ways, Truth in Our Times is a love letter to the First Amendment.
